Sydney, Australia: Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize today announced the appointment of respected Australian artist Tim Johnson as curator for the 18th annual exhibition and prize, to be presented at the National Art School from 11 April until 15 May 2014.
Tim Johnson is one of Australia’s most highly regarded painters, whose works are included in the permanent collections of all major Australian state galleries including the Art Gallery of NSW, the National Gallery of Victoria and the National Gallery of Australia.
“We are delighted to have secured Tim Johnson as curator of the 2014 Redlands Konica Minolta Prize. With a career spanning 30 years and having exhibited all over the world in – both solo and group exhibitions – he brings an incredible depth of knowledge to his role as curator of the 2014 Prize,” commented Dr Peter Lennox, Principal of Redlands.
Under the Prize’s unique model, Tim Johnson as curator selects up to 20 contemporary visual artists from Australia and New Zealand to put forward a single work for the Prize.  Each of those established artists are each, in turn, required to invite an emerging contemporary artist to present work in the Prize. In this manner, the Prize seeks to encourage mentoring relationships between different generations in the visual arts sector.
The respected annual prize offers $36,000 in prize money across three categories: the established artist prize supported by Konica Minolta ($25,000); the emerging artist prize supported by Allens ($10,000) and a viewer’s choice award ($1,000). The Prize places no limitations on artistic medium and attracts a diverse range of painting, photography, installation, sculpture and new media works.
A new guest judge for the 2014 Prize was also announced today, with Judith Blackall, former head of Artistic Programs at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, being appointed to the role. Judith joins existing judging panel members: Katie Dyer, National Art School Curator and Redlands Visual Arts teachers Mark Harpley and Fabian Byrne.
Redlands has a tradition of acquiring the winning art works in both established and emerging prize categories for their permanent collection.  Over the past two decades, Redlands has amassed an impressive collection through the Prize acquisitions, including works by some of Australia’s most respected names such as Callum Morton, Ben Quilty, Imants Tillers, Arthur Boyd, Tim Maguire, Tim Storrier, Garry Shead, Guan Wei, Dorothy Napangardi, Gloria Petyarri, Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Del Kathryn Barton and Ray Crooke.
With the exception of those works acquired by Redlands, all works exhibited in the Prize will be available for purchase.
A free exhibition of all artist works in the Prize will be presented at the National Art School Gallery from Friday 10 April until 15 May 2014.
